This exceptional 2.93 carat Oregon Sunstone is a true testament to the beauty and magic of the Pacific Northwest. Hand dug by RoseGemShop from the Dust Devil Mine in May of 2021, this rare gem was cut from an original 50+ carat rough stone into a breathtaking finished piece by master lapidary artist Mike Soebbing, known as “The Gemstone Man” of Montana. Every facet was crafted in the USA with precision and care.
This gem features a modified Cleopatra’s Eye cut—a unique style designed to give the impression that the stone itself is gazing back at you. Measuring 13x9mm at its widest point, tapering to 3mm at the ends, and 5mm deep, this cut shows off the stone’s fascinating natural characteristics while enhancing its dramatic brilliance and depth.
Oregon Sunstone is a rare variety of cuprian labradorite feldspar, known for its distinctive copper schiller. This particular stone exhibits the coveted “mystique” color shift—revealing warm peachy tones that transition into mossy greens when viewed from different angles. This effect is caused by tiny copper platelets suspended within the stone, a phenomenon unique to Oregon Sunstones and completely natural, with no enhancements or treatments.
Formed 13 to 14 million years ago during volcanic eruptions, Oregon Sunstone can only be found in a small region of Eastern Oregon, making each gem a true treasure of the American landscape. Whether set into a stunning pendant, transformed into a one-of-a-kind ring, or kept as a rare collector’s gem, this stone carries the story of ancient volcanoes and American craftsmanship into every new chapter of its life.
